Are There Heart Benefits From Fish Oil Supplements?

In the past I’ve written quite a bit about the health benefits of fish oil supplements. Today I want to look more specifically at the heart health benefits of fish oil supplementation, or fish oil capsules.

The Jan/Feb issue of Sports Health, A Multidisciplinary Approach, has published the results of a new study.

It was a study of the heart benefits of taking fish oil supplements, or essential fatty acid supplements, the main component of which is fish oil.

These football players took either fish oil capsules or a placebo, the fish oil capsules containing 2560 mg of omega-3 fatty acids (650 mg EPA and 450 mg DHA in each capsule.) 36 players took part.

The results of the study were very good, backing up other studies demonstrating the heart health benefits of Omega 3 supplementation, or Omega3 supplementation that increases the levels of essential fatty acids in the diet.

The results were good. HDL levels (good cholesterol) went up while LDL (bad cholesterol) went down.

And as well they also found a reduction in overall triglycerides levels.

Now this isn’t the first fish oil supplements study to confirm a link between improved heart health and the intake of more fish oil, or Omega 3 fatty acids. There’s now many studies that confirm the heart benefits of fish oil supplements.

And the AHA (American Heart Association) now recommends at least 2 gram a day intake of EPA and DHA, the 2 most important Omega 3 fats, more for those with high triglycerides.

So now that you know how important taking sufficient Omega 3 fats in your diet is, how do you increase your intake? By using the very best Omega 3 fish oil supplements.

But not all fish oil supplements are the same. Some have different levels of DHA in them and there are also issues with contamination with some heavy metals, PCBs and mercury. Not high levels, but enough to take notice of. The best fish oil supplements have no detectable levels of contaminants, and also a high level of DHA, so are better value, and clean.

So anyone at risk of heart related health problems should be taking the very best fish oil supplements. That’s you.

Is Resveratrol The Fountain Of Youth? Or A French Paradox?

What is the French Paradox? Dr. Serge Renaud first used the phrase the French Paradox to describe how the French people were able to have such long living lives without heart disease despite eating rich, fatty foods.

Morley Safer and the crew at 60 Minutes had a show regarding the merits of Resveratrol. The show spoke about the French Paradox and how this miracle supplement called Resveratrol was allowing the French people to sustain healthy lives. It was said to be due to the red wine that the French drink.

After that, sales of red wine shot through the roof as everyone who was interested in staving off heart disease began drinking red wine. However was it just the wine or was there something IN the wine that allowed the French to enjoy their culinary delights without regard for heart attacks?

Resveratrol, is the side benefot of red wine as it is found in the skin of red grapes used to make the libation. Who would have thought that drinking alcohol would be good for you but red wine, and the Resveratrol therein actually is good for your health. Resveratrol has been known to help with everything from treating cancer, to helping one lose weight to being a proponent for retarding aging.

Since Resveratrol is found naturally, it is not classified as a drug and is found readily available. But the question everyone wants to know is does it work. Is Resveratrol the miracle supplement that it is made out to be. Well it seems so and millions of people worldwide swear by its benefits without any side effects.

As Resveratrol is not a drug. It is completely natural. It is a nutritional supplement. We hear so many people asking is Resveratrol for real. Can something from the skin of red grapes be so effective in treating and preventing major ailments like heart disease? The simple answer seems to be yes.

Resveratrol however, can’t be attributed to helping heart disease that develops for reasons outside of the type of diet one has. A University of Pennsylvania doctor, Dr. Paul Rozin has been somewhat emphatic that Resveratrol can’t really help with those contributing factors beyond one’s diet…not yet anyway.

Heart disease indeed can be brought on by a number of factors that are not related to the diet. Research as to the benefits of Reveratrol in this regard is ongoing.

In the 60 Minutes report with Morley Safer, Dr. Christoph Westphal, who was interviewed and he said that he believes that Resveratrol may soon become a part of our daily regimen. Soon, we all be using and enjoying the benefits of Resveratrol.

Westphal truly believes that Resveratrol has the ability to change how we view health care.

Heart diseases are pretty common. Millions of people in the world today live with one kind of heart disease or another, and many are even able to thrive. Heart disease shouldnt be taken lightly, though. Its still one of the most common causes of death in the world today. In fact, in the United States alone, someone dies of a heart disease every thirty seconds.

With that in mind, dont forget to watch out for any signs of heart disease and to keep informed about what causes heart disease. Being informed can literally save your life, so make sure that you know what to avoid and how to detect heart disease.

The numbers certainly arent pretty, but this doesnt mean that you have the excuse to just hide under the covers and wait until your turn to croak comes along. Often, being able to detect the signs of heart disease early will do a great deal to help you be able to manage it “doing so could even save your life. On the other hand, avoiding what causes heart disease in the first place is a really great way to keep from getting one in the first place.

Another possible cause of heart disease is smoking. Now, we all know that smoking is really bad for you; it can mess up your lungs, cause cancer, constrict circulation, and discolor your teeth. So, heres another reason for you to throw your cancer sticks away!

You know what causes heart disease too? Bad dietary habits and a sedentary lifestyle! Not getting any cardiovascular exercise and eating too much of the wrong stuff can really put a strain on your heart; particularly if you also start to put on weight because of it.

Another really common cause for heart disease is, unfortunately, not something a person can avoid: genetics. So, yes, if the universe is against you, youll have been born with a heart disease already hardwired into your system. Thats a tough break, but most of the time, with proper treatment, any heart disease, regardless of what caused it, can be managed so that you can continue to live a normal and happy life.

This can damage your heart, which is what causes heart disease. Or most heart disease, anyway. All you need to do to avoid getting these kinds of heart diseases is to maintain a healthy diet and to get lots of exercise; especially cardiovascular exercise.

Also, just make sure to watch out for signs of heart disease, like chest pain, chest numbness, and choking. They might not always necessarily be signs of heart disease per se, but getting yourself checked when these symptoms show up is definitely a wise thing to do.

H1N1 and Swine Flu: Is it a Pandemic?

H1N1 or swine influenza spreads via sneezing and coughing, which then infects others. The majority of people have had the normal flu in their lifetime, and the symptoms of that and H1N1 are similar such as a fever over 100 degrees farenheit, chills, fatigue, stuffy nose, aching body, sore throat. There are some differences with H1N1 though.

For children, take them to the hospital immediately if they have difficulty breathing, severe vomiting, passiveness or not waking up, unusual and severe irritability, not drinking enough, skin tone being bluish or grayish, repeat flu symptoms that worsen when they return.

For adults, urgent medical symptoms include difficulty breathing, pressure in the chest or stomach, pain in those areas also, dizziness, confused thinking, acute vomiting, and again flu symptoms that decrease and then return with a more severe cough and a fever.

HINI flu. This is a respiratory disease and is a type of flu virus that occurs frequently in pigs. It is not a normal year that humans contract swine flu, but it can result in a human infection and this year definitely has. This is because it is a new form of the virus. It has two genes from flu viruses that are typically in pigs in certain parts of the world. At this time, there is no population of pigs in the U.S. that are showing an infection of this virus. The H1N1 was found in a herd of pigs in Alberta, Canada which are now quarantined. Do not be concerned however about contracting this virus from eating pork. It is not distributed through food, but is a respiratory disease. I realize Egypt slaughtered all their pigs, but they are the only country that has done this, at least that has been broadcast. Pandemic flu is one in which there is minimal immunity in ones body, and therefore the disease spreads quickly from person to person. There is no pandemic flu at this time. Pandemic flu is a typically caused from a new flu virus. Pandemic flu results in a global spread of acute illness with huge populations becoming ill from the disease. At this time, the H1N1 virus is being observed and monitored carefully as to how the virus is spreading. Seasonal (or common) flu is a respiratory illness that is spread from person to person, there is a vaccine for it, and people normally have some degree of immunity to this flu. Precautions: have plenty of Kleenex on hand to cough and sneeze into and throw out your used Kleenex rather than leaving it around for germs to spread. Wash hands with soap, use sanitizers when youre not near soap and water, and tell people at work to head for home if they are showing symptoms of this flu.

So whats the big deal about swine flu compared to the other influenza that goes around? As in any flu, other medical conditions you might have can in combination become more dangerous to your system. For example, heart disease patients are more susceptible to having medical concerns heightened by the flu.

Having a flu shot will not protect your from swine influenza, otherwise there would be lineups of people waiting for their vaccination.

There is an anti-viral drug for H1N1 that can be provided, but usually the symptoms need to be recent, within two days prior to having the drug. Health care departments are administering this anti-viral drug to the most severely ill and those who have to be in close proximity with them who are more susceptible to infection.

The most at risk population with respiratory conditions: Children under five, pregnant women and people over age 65.

There were several people who came back from Mexico this past spring break at our office. We all wash our hands at work and a couple staff worked from home for one week as their spouse or them was feeling ill. I have not become ill, nor have any of them tested positive though they have been tested a few times now as a precaution.

Watch Your Weight to Save Your Heart

Today, a lot of significance is given to how much a person weighs. We go on a diet to improve our appearance according to what people think we should look like. Improved health and energy are other reasons we want to lose weight.

If you’re concerned about your heart health, you may be particularly careful to pay attention to your weight. But the truth of the matter is not all weight is created equal. What matters more than the actual number on the scale is the ratio of your waist to your hips.

The American Heart Association warns us that a man with a larger than 40 inch waistline and women with a waist line larger than 35 inches are taking their chances on developing heart disease. If your waist to hip ratio is high, you’re at greater risk for heart disease than an overweight person with smaller proportions.

There is fat that gathers in your body that is called visceral fat. This is what causes the higher probability of developing heart problems. This fat is underneath your muscle and congregating around your internal organs. This type of fat is more stressful to the heart than any other kind.

Some of the problems it causes are high cholesterol, elevated blood sugar, and hypertension. When you combine these problems, the probability of heart problems increases.

The good news is that even if you only lose a small amount of weight around your waist, you may have huge decreases in your risk of heart disease. And one of the best ways to target the midsection is through practicing exercises like yoga.

It’s not at all necessary to spend your life at the gym, either. A session of exercise lasting anywhere from twenty to forty minutes each day will leave you healthier and slimmer in no time.

You can also handle your weight problem by changing your diet to include lots of fruits, vegetables, lean meat and whole grains. Eliminate food products that contain high levels of fats, particularly saturated or trans, as well as sugar.

Eating healthier will currently help you to lose some of the fat, however, it also regulates blood sugar, lowers cholesterol, and blood pressure. In combination, this takes care of your heart concerns. This is the way to a healthy heart.

By getting rid of that extra weight around your waist, you might be able to fit into that new outfit. But more importantly, it will help you to stay healthy and have a more enjoyable life.

Reducing the Risk Factors of Obesity, Diabetes, and Heart Disease

Diabetes is a dangerous health problem. In adults, diabetes is often a result of long-term nutritional neglect and abuse.

Most of us don’t eat breakfast. Our fuel supply is depleted, and we wind up running on fumes. We grab a high-calorie muffin or a candy bar later in the morning when we’re really, really hungry. What we don’t know is that this snack causes insulin to dump out of the pancreas into the bloodstream, as the body attempts to process the surge in blood glucose from the snack we just ate.

This pattern is repeated throughout the day. A graph of the average person’s blood sugar levels would show sharp spikes - both highs and lows - in every 24-hour period. Eventually, the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas wear out. The result is consistently high levels of blood glucose which is called diabetes.

Diabetes may cause severe eye problems, severe kidney problems, and severe circulatory problems. It is associated with obesity, heart disease, and increased mortality. Not good.

An obvious preventive strategy would be to ensure that blood glucose levels are steady throughout the day. Actually, this is easy to do. All that’s required is to develop healthy eating habits and regular exercise.

Eat breakfast - a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese mixed with a 6-ounce cup of yogurt is all you need to increase your fuel stores throughout the morning.

Do food combining at every meal (or as often as you can) - always eat a combination of protein and carbohydrate

No between-meal snacks please!

Regular exercise that is challenging and fun - build-up gradually and be consistent

We’re in the middle of several deadly epidemics in the United States. Obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are affecting more and more people every year. Recent statistics show that two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. Thirty percent of American children are obese. Approximately 21 million Americans have diabetes. One child out of every 500 has type I diabetes. In America, 72 million adults have high blood pressure. These are shocking statistics, considering that U.S. health care expenditures totaled $2 trillion in 2006. That’s 2 TRILLION dollars.

As Americans, we’re getting less healthy by the day. The good news is there are many things we can do about these trends. You CAN climb stairs without getting out of breath. You CAN regain the youthful glow of vitality. You CAN be vigorous and proud of your body, rather than worrying about what’s going to be the next thing to break down.
